Tell us about your roles before you worked at Compass
I started my career in healthcare 18 years ago as a cleaner in my local hospital. I quickly found a passion for healthcare cleaning and knew this was the career and industry for me. Progressing to further roles over the course of 16 years, I took on positions as Senior Supervisor to Duty Manager, Contract Manager and Implementation Manager.
What is your role in Compass?
I am a Healthcare Cleaning SME working with our healthcare partners and supporting the mobilisation of new contracts. I also lead project work and trials including the implementation of new innovations and working closely with our clients, suppliers and site teams to continuously enhance and develop the delivery of our a+ cleaning solution.
How have you developed your expertise?
I have been fortunate to have an incredible mentor who has guided and supported me. I have also become a member of various healthcare associations to expand my wider industry knowledge. Plus, I now have almost 20 years’ experience and having worked through the pandemic in particular, I have learnt a lot during this time.
Tell us why you like working at Compass and where you see yourself in three years’ time.
I like working at Compass because it is a company that operates as a people first business, truly acknowledging that people are at the heart of our business, partnerships and therefore success. I see myself continuing to grow in my current role and expanding the knowledge and experience I have gained in the 2 years I have been with Compass. This is a space that is constantly innovating and I look forward to driving this for our healthcare clients.
Callum Lane, Contract Manager – Cleaning SME - Healthcare - Compass Group UK & Ireland
What is your role within Compass
I joined Compass at the age of 20 - my first role was as a customer liaison manager for 14forty. I then began working at Southern Health Foundation Trust in 2017. Working as an Area Manager initially, I then got promoted to Domestic Manager at Royal Surrey County Hospital, a large acute trust within our Medirest portfolio. I am now back at Southern Health, who have just received Exemplar site status for cleaning from NHS England, an accolade I am very proud of.
Within your current role what training and development have you undertaken?
I have taken the apprenticeship route and completed Level 6 Chartered management degree apprenticeship via Aston University.
How have you developed your expertise?
I have taken the time to understand each function within healthcare and what underpins them to allow them to be successful. When the opportunity to implement the National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2021 came along, I facilitated the implementation and modernisation of the housekeeping department within my client’s site, ensuring the standards were applied as early as April 2021.

Working with Compass Healthcare has allowed me to grow as a person and within the business; it has also given me the opportunity to learn constantly.
I have worked my way through from the frontline to a Contract Manager position, which has allowed me to develop my skillset and carve out a specific area of expertise, which I really enjoy.
